Briefly describe a contemporary social problem of concern or interest to you. Why does this problem deserve public attention and resources? Recommend a course of action for social change. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Social Dilemmas" essay for you Create order There are many social problems affecting the world that should be of concern. There are a few specific social problems that are near and dear to me. One of these problems is the epidemic we have, with not effectively treating Mental Health. There are so many problems in our society revolving around Mental Health. In this country, we have the tools, knowledge, and means to battle this problem, but we lack the staff and money to help bridge the gap. There is still a large percentage of people in this country that still dont believe mental health is equally important, if not more important than physical health. Many people still dont make the connection that our mental health is the nucleus of our overall physical health. If even these reasons arent valid, we can turn to the economic toll mental health takes on our country. When we have people in society that are not getting the treatment that they need, it puts a financial burden on the economy. This problem is important to me because I have suffered from mental health issues for many years. Living with the inability to consistently control your emotions was very hard to grow up with. Instead of someone giving it a neutral name like a Deep Feeler, for someone who is highly emotional, or feels more deeply than others, I was called a Dramatic Crybaby. Establishing a negative name for what I was going through as a child, caused a negative self-reflection when it comes to emotions. Years later I learned that I suffer from Major Depression Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. The rest is still undetermined, but maybe if we stop criticizing people for being different and start trying to embrace the differences we can save a lot of people from a lot of emotional stress. With enough practice at treating with the intent to understand, maybe one day we wont have a mental health social problem. Another social problem that causes me a lot of emotional stress is Animal Abuse and An imal Cruelty. Animal abuse and cruelty are inflicting abuse, neglecting, or causing death to an animal. There appear to be two types of animal cruelty, passive and malicious. A passive abuser is more likely to neglect an animal without the basic necessities to live. A malicious abuser intentionally causes harm to an animal. Both passive and malicious abuse is illegal. It has been over 200 years since Animal Rights have been officially established, but it is still occurring all the time. Animals are entitled to their own set of rights that ensure they have possession of their own lives and should be granted similar interests as us. In my own personal life, I have witnessed a couple of animal abuse incidents. Although I took the appropriate action that is considered lawful, the animal still died due to the neglect of their owner. At this time, I was unsure if I was more infuriated at the owner, or at the lawful system that failed to do what it was created for. Instead of sharing posts on Facebook about the sad stories, we should be rallying to change or refine the lawful animal abuse systems in practice that dont seem to help. Educating people about animal abuse and animal rights should be more than the same sad commercial played every hour, that most people change the channel from. No human wants to feel like the bad guy, so making educational videos that can help actually educate the lawful and unlawful, right and wrong way to treat animals, instead of bombarding them with something that makes them put up their defenses. A lot of people have never had the experience of growing up with animals, and become unsure of how to act, or even scared around them. Implementing animals in classrooms and educational settings can help set a foundation for a more knowledgeable society. Incorporating animals into therapy sessions and educational groups gives animals the chance to receive the proper care and social interaction that they need, as well as teach people and children on the correct and lawful ways to treat animals. This would establish Animal Right Advocates from a young age. These two social problems are just two that I am very passionate about. I feel both Mental Health and Animal Abuse/Rights are what have really made me consider down the path of Animal-Assisted Social Work. The understanding of how much being around animals has had such a positive impact on my own mental health is what makes me want to share it with others. These problems are big problems in society, and big problems take big changes. It wont be easy and it will take some time, but big changes take a lot of small changes first. We have to start somewhere by being the voice for those who cant speak. 4.Briefly describe a situation that presented you with an ethical challenge or that called for a difficult judgment on your part. What was the outcome of your decision, and what did you learn from the experience? (Please disguise the identities of people and organizations that may have been involved.) An ethical challenge is when you are faced with a decision between two or more choices, to which one must choose the most ethical option. There are often a large number of ethical challenges that medical professionals have to make. Social Workers practicing at a medical facility often help these medical professionals with making the right judgment call for the ethical challenge. A judgment call is a choice that you or a team of professionals have to make when faced with a difficult ethical challenge. Medical facilities are not the only places that judgment call needs to be made. Social Workers who work on child welfare cases have to make judgment calls all the time. They have to weigh t he pros and cons of each side of the ethical challenge to make the best judgment call for the child welfare. Sometimes we have to make judgment calls for ethical challenges in our own lives. Several years ago I had to make my own judgment call for an ethical challenge that I was faced with. In 2011 I made a really good friend named Adam through mutual friends of ours. Our friendship was a close bond that went on for a couple of years. We were there for each other through all of the great times, as well as all of the bad. Adam and I both shared our deep love for animals. We also both suffered from very similar mental health disorders. Although our friendship was unbreakable, Adams mother was a huge rift in our relationship. For many years Adam and his mom dealt with their problems by self-prescribing opioids and a range of amphetamines. At the time I was unaware of this. Adam seemed normal, but his mom was hard to be around. By taking these medications often in large quantities she would sporadically display symptoms of Mania Bipolar Disorder. One moment she would be easy going and happy and the next she would whirl into a manic rage at anyone and everyone. There were many times I can recall the police having to dispatch to keep the peace in the house. One of these incid ents his mother flew into a manic rage and lashed out at me and my younger brother. She began hitting me, and my car as I was trying to put my brother in his car seat to leave. This day was a very traumatizing incident for both me and my brother. After the dust had settled I was faced with my own ethical challenge. I had to make a judgment call to either distance myself from Adam and his mother to save both my mental and physical health, or try to continue being friends with Adam and potentially threaten my own safety and mental stability. The judgment call I made was to distance myself. Although I was able to regain control over my mental stability and physical wellbeing, I lost a really great friend. I learned the difficult lesson that sometimes you have to choose yourself. You cant always give your all to everyone. Sometimes you have to put your own mental health first. It has been almost four years and I still keep my distance from Adam and his mother, but as it turns out Ive he ard that Adam and his mom have been sober for two years now. 5.(Answer this item only if it applies to you.) Are there any special circumstances that have affected your academic history and which should be considered by the Admissions Committee? In elementary school, I remember all of my classmates loved to read books. Every Thursday the whole class would make a trip to the library to check out books. Books that we read were met with a reward system. Each book you were able to finish reading, you received a point. The more difficult the book, the higher number of points. At the end of the month, the top kids who had the most points received extra recess time and pizza parties. Unfortunately, I cant recall a single time I was able to reap these rewards. It wasnt until later in my life that I found that I had a slower processing rate than my classmates. In middle school, I became extremely concerned with fitting in. I used to think that this was a normal way of thinking. In middle school, I was also diagnosed with Attention Deficient Disorder. I didnt understand back then what that meant. All I knew was that I had a hard time concentrating on a lot of things, especially reading and taking tests. I recall worrying heavily about bad grades, my performance during sports, and pleasing my parents and teachers. Growing up I would be distraught over any criticism. The fear of failure kept me from pushing my boundaries. Throughout my schooling, I became a very cautious person. In high school when I stopped taking medication for my ADD it really showed in my grades how hard it was for me to focus on doing well. Once I didnt make a great grade on a test or assignment, I felt like I was a failure at everything. I began to lose interest in school as a whole. After an up and down battle with losing interest, and then trying to regain control over my failing grades, I began to develop panic attacks. In the middle of a class, my chest would get tight, I would instantly have a hard time breathing, and I would have the feeling of being trapped. Even today I still have a very hard time going to any type of place or event with crowds of people. It is difficult to go to concerts, busy restaurants, and even shopping for groceries. I still have the same symptoms of a tight chest, labored breathing, and the feeling of not being able to escape, but through therapy and grounding techniques I have been learning how to cope with it. All of these problems definitely make any academics harder, but I use my personal experiences and techniques to help and teach others that it is still possible to succeed.

Changing Perspectives of the Nuclear Family in Rémy...

Within the last decade or so, the ideologies of the nuclear family have presented the familial formation of the LGBQT community as invisible. In the short film directed by Rà ©my Huberdeau titled, Transforming Family, it aims to shed light that other forms of families do exist, specifically in the transgender/transexual community. For people who identify themselves as transexual and/or transgendered, they choose and behave according to the gender they feel matches who they are; it does not match their biological self.(Namaste, 2011, 422). According to Trans Pulse, one out of every four trans people in Ontario is a parent (Huberdeau, 2012). These families in no shape or form emulate the nuclear family, though they work just as well as any other family. Individuals who identify themselves as being gay or lesbian at times â€Å"feel forced to choose between acknowledging their sexuality and having a family† (Kimmel Holler, 2011, 182), they feel that they have to choose either o ne or the other; that they cannot have both. The same can be said for individuals who identify themselves as transgender/transexual. This can been seen through first time parents, Syrus and Nick and single mother Dana. Before Syrus or Nick began their transition from female to male, no one ever provided them with the option of saving their eggs before they began testosterone therapy (Huberdeau, 2012). For Dana, she chose the option of surrogacy, however, due to what her doctor referred to as ‘transgender

A Summary of Leadership and what it entails Free Essays

string(198) " place a high premium on the human dimension of leading and the demand to acknowledge and advance non merely the development of our ain considerable accomplishments but those of all our co-workers\." At one degree a leader is the individual who non merely influences what happens but is able to do things go on by originating alterations, forming how alteration happens and doing all the necessary constructions, determinations and activities meaningful. But, accepting this position of leading should n’t intend that we manipulate co-workers and alter their behaviour to suit our prearranged norm. It does intend that to be an effectual leader we need to be able to give co-workers a sense of apprehension of what they are really making in the school. We will write a custom essay sample on A Summary of Leadership and what it entails or any similar topic only for you Order Now In seeking to clear up leading in simple footings – it is utile to sum up some of the common traits that characterize effectual leaders.A This sort of sum-up can be divided into specific countries and include how leading has to be concerned with: a sense of duty the demand to finish undertakings being willing and able to take hazards holding the capacity to manage emphasis Bing able to act upon and organize the attempts of co-workers. Leadership manners and functions Leadership has to be about edifice and keeping a sense of vision, civilization and interpersonal relationships every bit good as affecting direction issues that include the coordination, support and monitoring of our schools as organisations. We have to be able to equilibrate both functions. There is a utile statement from an infant caput instructor in an article calledA Effective School Leadership, published by the NCSL: ‘Leadership is about holding vision and articulating, telling precedences, acquiring others to travel with you, invariably reexamining what you are making and keeping on to things you value. Management is about the maps, processs and systems by which you realize the vision. ‘ What is of import about our manner of leading is that it needs to be appropriate for what is go oning and for the undertakings or procedures that are taking topographic point. All manners of leading have to take into history, foremost, how to finish undertakings and, secondly, what is the best manner to finish them. This is the procedure that everyone goes through in footings of effectual squads and relationships between co-workers. Tasks will non be completed decently by co-workers who are non motivated. There is a helpful step that tries to equilibrate undertakings and procedures utilizing four different manners of leading depending on how of import the undertakings are, or how of import squad work and the relationships between co-workers are: Stating co-workers what to doA – this is high on acquiring undertakings finished and low on developing and prolonging relationships and squad work. Selling an thought to colleaguesA – once more, this is high on undertakings but besides means that relationships are of import because a certain sum of understanding is necessary. Carrying co-workers to participateA – this is comparatively low on undertakings as the most of import facet of this manner of leading is to acquire co-workers working efficaciously together. Delegating to colleaguesA – this is low on undertakings and low on relationship and is a mature manner in a school with committed and effectual squads. Leaderships are able to confidently delegate undertakings to co-workers who themselves will hold to make up one’s mind what leading manner to utilize. There are fundamentally, two sorts of functions necessary for a leader. One derives from the place held – you as caput instructor, your deputy or adjunct caput and so on. The other from personal abilities and see – many of these abilities are included in the earlier list of leading, interpersonal and professional accomplishments for leading. Having the ability and expertness and utilizing all the available accomplishments will intend that you and, in fact, any leader at any degree in the school ‘s hierarchy has the of import function of: calculating what needs making be aftering how to make it forming what needs to be done deputing undertakings to allow co-workers, squads and working parties coordinating and commanding what happens Monitoring and measuring its success. Leadership at many degrees In many ways we are merely every bit good as all the remainder of the leaders we have in topographic point. This is mostly because leading has to be exercised at many degrees. All instructors are, for illustration, leaders in their ain schoolrooms because the existent procedure of instruction is about act uponing, directing, puting marks, utilizing appropriate resources and monitoring and evaluating successes. As instructors develop their accomplishments they will get down to take co-workers as course of study coordinators. Their functions, like ours, will affect people, information and determinations. In schools – all our schools – we will necessitate to take and advance leaders and leading along the undermentioned lines: Associating good to peopleA – this is where you have to move as a sort of front man and speak at maps such as meetings with parents. At the same clip you will be choosing, back uping, preparation, mentoring, monitoring and actuating co-workers you work aboard. Using information to take and raise standardsA – there is a changeless demand to supervise, fact happen and measure state of affairss by roll uping every bit much information as possible from persons, squads of instructors and from paperss and studies. Once the information is collected it has to be used to pull off alteration and to raise criterions by being disseminated and communicated to whoever needs it. This will intend clear and articulate meetings, written memos, well-managed treatments, studies and policy paperss. Leadership and determination makingA – all leaders have to take determinations and all facets of leading involve determination devising. Some determinations are instant statements, for illustration those affecting wellness and safety and hazard appraisal. Many others, nevertheless, will affect audience and consensus. This means meetings and meetings mean co-workers who may necessitate converting that alteration – and most determinations are related to alter – has to go on. In fact working with co-workers and taking them forward is far from easy. We all need to do certain that we place a high premium on the human dimension of leading and the demand to acknowledge and advance non merely the development of our ain considerable accomplishments but those of all our co-workers. You read "A Summary of Leadership and what it entails" in category "Essay examples" Possibly stoping as I started will organize a orderly circle. But instead than utilize a glib definition of leading Lashkar-e-Taiba ‘s quotation mark from Ibsen who suggests that, ‘a community is like a ship and everyone ought to be prepared to take the helm ‘ . School Context An Elementary School with about 500 pupils described largely as helter-skelter and ailing organized school with no activities, development or any mission. The school is located in a freshly decentralized territory where a popularly elected council of parents, community members, instructors, and decision makers decides on the principal ‘s contract, approves the budget, and passes the school betterment program. The aim is to make a clime that will promote both pupils and instructors to hold a clear mission focused on a uninterrupted betterment in all Fieldss of the school life. As the new rule I will make my best to see hallways that are safe and orderly, categories that are more interesting and piquant, every bit good as programs going accomplished. Plan/Changes/Methodology Before get downing the alteration procedure, go familiar with the school betterment rhythm, the phases of the alteration procedure, and alteration theoretical accounts associated with each. Leaderships must be able to separate between the school betterment rhythm and the alteration procedure, find where the school is located within the alteration procedure, and place appropriate following stairss. Learn more about the complexnesss of the alteration procedure by reading, speaking with adept practicians, and go toing seminars. Accept the alteration procedure as a positive experience to be understood and embraced, instead than a negative experience to be feared and avoided. When you are ready to get down the school betterment procedure, bring in alteration experts and facilitators to construct the capacity of school staff to take alteration attempts. It is of import to pull upon the expertness and accomplishments of university module, cardinal office forces, external advisers, professional staff developers, and others. Lead treatments about the school ‘s â€Å" history of alteration † in order to understand how and why past alteration attempts have succeeded or failed. Learn about the functions that principals, instructors, cardinal office staff, parents, board members, and others involved in functioning kids and young person drama in the school betterment procedure, and utilize this cognition to organize effectual school betterment squads. School leaders should understand and cultivate their functions and the functions that others play within betterment enterprises. To construct a more collaborative school civilization, institute module survey groups and cross-grade or section squads and supply clip for collegial work. Build committedness and a collaborative civilization to back up the alteration procedure by being a â€Å" leader of leaders, † holding and pass oning high outlooks, and showing assurance in school staff and the environing community. Form partnerships with parents, concerns, and societal service and community bureaus to consolidate resources and run into the full scope of pupil demands – emotional, societal, and academic – in order to better pupil acquisition. Create high-achieving acquisition environments by choosing and incorporating a assortment of plans to better instruction and acquisition. Establish and follow a set of guidelines for implementing new attacks to student acquisition. Reflect on your leading patterns utilizing leading manner stock lists, studies, and/or checklists. Use a assortment of methods to observe success ; for illustration, some schools have used the undermentioned activities to observe success: Planing squads have repasts together at the terminal of the twelvemonth to reexamine advancement and celebrate success. Principals send out praises and notes that celebrate success. Schools clasp assemblies to acknowledge non merely the success of pupils but of their squads. The chief base on ballss out java cups with the school logo to acknowledge instructors and squads that have been peculiarly successful. The school betterment procedure takes topographic point in three phases: induction, execution, and institutionalization. Knowing about the challenges and jobs every bit good as the success factors associated with each phase of the alteration procedure can increase the likeliness of success. Initially, some members of the school community – including school staff – may be loath to alter. School leaders, through their actions and words, can get the better of such reluctance by honoring risk-taking and encouraging school community members to offer new thoughts and schemes. If reforms are to better larning for all pupils, leaders must happen and implement meaningful course of study and effectual instructional plans for an progressively diverse pupil population. To guarantee that reforms do non overlook full groups of pupils, leaders must understand the civilization and demands of diverse pupils. Without a focussed attempt to aline and incorporate school betterment enterprises, the likely consequence will be fragmented, uncoordinated plans and activities that may hold conflicting aims. It is up to school leaders to make a shared vision and mission for school betterment, to organize assorted alteration attempts so that they work together toward similar aims instead than against one another, and to guarantee that these attempts reach for the common end of improved acquisition for all pupils. Leaderships of betterment attempts need to turn to the jobs of resources ( clip, money, and support ) , the demand to develop and retain knowing and motivated forces, and the challenge posed by the switching ends of the cardinal office, the province, and the local community. Leaderships should be wary of mismanaged understanding. Everyone in a group agrees to a determination – even though no 1 in the group supports the determination – because they are unwilling or unable to pass on their reserves ; it besides refers to a state of affairs in which everyone in the group agrees about a job that must be solved, but no one actively pursues schemes or actions to cover with the job. Therefore, leaders must foster squads that are able to pass on and work out jobs openly. Now that the school has identified the assorted constituents of its betterment program, the undertaking is to convey everything together into a consistent plan of patterns that will turn to its identified demands and ease the betterment procedure. The program must besides include all necessary execution information ( e.g. , who is responsible, timeline ) . Some territories or provinces have a needed format for schools ‘ action program. For those that do n’t, this activity helps participants reflect on the most appropriate format to back up their alteration attempt. There is no â€Å" best † layout for an action program. Depending on the nature and demands of different schools and depending on any province or local demands by which they must stay, the manner in which their action programs are laid out will differ. The primary intent of the action program is to be a utile tool for steering school staff in implementing agreed-upon effectual patterns and support activ ities. Having a clear and comprehensive action program helps guarantee the effectivity and efficiency of a school ‘s betterment attempts. Developing and implementing a school betterment program is an iterative procedure ; if a program is to be effectual, betterment attempts must be on-going and uninterrupted, their consequence reviewed and documented in the class of execution. Having all improvement-related information in one complete papers provides a clear image of the full betterment enterprise, its ends, and how all patterns and support activities are intended to suit together in traveling the school toward those ends. This helps prevent atomization of attempt and, over clip, makes it easier to place countries of failing or incompatibility. Having one comprehensive papers besides makes updating information and maintaining path of execution activities much easier. Using an electronic templet can be particularly helpful for easy updating the program. He does this by portraying the history of the Judaic people. Yevtushenko besides uses assorted literary devices to rise the sentiment of the verse form. The verse form is told in the first individual, by the writer of the verse form. In the verse form it is besides evident that he is turn toing all Russian citizens when he writes # 8220 ; O Russian people # 8221 ; . In this mode Yevtushenko is able to eulogise the Judaic victims of the Holocaust in forepart of a broad audience. This technique besides allows him to talk straight to the Russian people and state them of their wrongs at the terminal of the verse form. Through use of the first individual he is able to put himself in the assorted state of affairss of antisemitism in history. We will write a custom essay sample on Babi Yar Essay Research Paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page He takes us from Egypt, to the cross ; from the Dryfus matter to the pogroms ; from Anne Frank # 8217 ; s dark room to the slaughter of Babi Yar. Through all this Yevtushenko proclaims that # 8220 ; I # 8221 ; was at that place. This gives the reader a sense of being trapped in the center of these dismaying events. The first individual gives an eerie description that a 3rd individual description could non give. After he finishes his recitation of past events he begins turn toing the Russian people of the present. He tells them that in general the Russians are a good hearted people. But, he goes on to state that there are a minority of Russians who ruin the good name of the whole. Yevtushenko contends that these people call themselves # 8220 ; The brotherhood of the Russian people # 8221 ; . However, he so goes on to straight belie their self-proclaimed name with cagey utilizations of enunciation. He claims that the Internationale, or the Russian # 8220 ; brotherhood # 8221 ; vocal, will merely be sung after these same Jew-baiters are dead. In the last lines of the verse form he admits that although he is non a Jew he demands to # 8220 ; allow me be a Jew # 8221 ; . Merely when he is a Hebrew can he so travel on to # 8220 ; name myself a Russian # 8221 ; . What he means by all this is that the Russian people a rhenium non a group of Jew-haters, but instead a state of people who feel for the sorrows of the Judaic people. The first stanza is an debut that tells us the juncture of the verse form. It claims that # 8220 ; There are no memorials on Babi Yar, A steep ravine is all, a unsmooth memorial. # 8221 ; He so goes on to give the remainder of the verse form as a eulogium to the Jews killed by the Russians. Therefore, this first stanza gives us the ground why he wrote the verse form. This verse form would in fact be the commemoration for Babi Yar. The first stanza besides does a terrific occupation of puting the glooming tone for the remainder of the verse form. He besides seems to suggest at the fact that the antisemitism that began with the Christians is the same exact antisemitism that has continued to the present day of the month. The antisemitism of Egypt remained in # 8220 ; her ancient yearss # 8221 ; , but he insists that # 8220 ; I perish on the cross, and even now I bear the ruddy Markss of nails. # 8221 ; His use of the words # 8220 ; even now # 8221 ; postulate that that specific antisemitism continues to the present day of the month. In the following few stanzas sound plays a critical function. In the first line of the 2nd stanza there is a repeat of the missive # 8220 ; d # 8221 ; in # 8220 ; Dryfus, detested, denounced # 8221 ; . This sound conjures something nearing from behind you, like a March. Although, this stanza merely affects one adult male, Dryfus, but there is the image of something nearing in the # 8220 ; d # 8221 ; sound. The 2nd line of the 3rd stanza reads # 8220 ; I seam to see blood jet and spread # 8221 ; . Here we have the repeat of the # 8220 ; s # 8221 ; sound. This sounds like air get awaying from something, acquiring ready to detonate. Then all of a sudden there are # 8220 ; The rampant pogrom booms # 8221 ; . Thingss are acquiring worse. In the undermentioned stanza is a # 8220 ; translucent branchlet # 8221 ; . The perennial # 8220 ; t # 8221 ; sound is like the ticking of a clip bomb. Immediately after this one rea ds of the # 8220 ; thumping # 8221 ; , or the concluding detonation. The detonation creates a # 8220 ; soundless # 8221 ; sound and an # 8220 ; endless soundless # 8221 ; because # 8220 ; 1000s and thousandsof 1000s are dead # 8221 ; . There is barely anyone left to assail. Almost all the Jews are dead.

SHORT STORY ESSAY

SHORT STORY ESSAY SHORT STORY ESSAY Dhesi 1 Ranvir Dhesi Mr.Depew ENG3U November 10th , 2014 Initiation Symbolism and Conflict In the short story Initiation written by Sylvia Plath the protagonist Millicent Arnold is undergoing a long and difficult set of trials and tribulations with the hopes of being accepted into the most elite sorority at her high school. One of the challenges has Millicent asking people on the bus what they had eaten for breakfast. While doing this she learns about the Heather birds which essentially do whatever they want to. The Heather birds becomes a symbol of freedom and independence that helps develop the internal conflict that Millicent has on whether or not she should join the sorority. Millicent questions whether or not she should be joining the sorority shortly after her conversation with the man on the bus. The man explains to Millicent that Heather birds â€Å"...live on the mythological moors and fly about all day long singing wild and sweet in the sun†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Vi ewpoints, 205). This quote shows how free and independent the Heather birds are as they are living wild and free with no worries. Millicent now thinks about becoming more like the Heather bird in terms of independance and does not see herself wanting to be a part of the sorority as much as she had previously wanted to. However, her mind is not completely made up yet and she continues to participate in the sororities challenges. She contemplates her future and Dhesi 2 knows that her friendship with her friend Tracy would be put in jeopardy if she joins the sorority because she would be at the top of the high school hierarchy and would not be allowed to associate with people below her. At this point Millicent is completely torn between what she wants to do and has very limited time to make up her mind. She wants to be part of the popular group but at the same time does not want to lose her friend Tracy in the progress. As the day of judgement comes closer and closer Millicent makes up her mind. She realizes that the sorority was not all what she thought it would be like. Millicent now sees the sorority as an exclusive social group that gives girls a false sense of superiority over everybody else and no longer wants anything to do with it. She realizes now that because of this label that was put on her it may have been the only reason Herb even talked to her in the first place. Millicent questions if Herb actually likes her for he rself or if it was just to benefit from her soon being a part of the sorority. This leads Millicent to think about the Heather birds that live care free and far from any drama created by the other birds. She sees the sorority girls as â€Å"...pale grey brown birds in a flock , Short Story Essay Short Story Essay Imaginative Text – Short Story Unit: The Gold Watch Hope on the Battlefield By Sarah Ryland As the evening skies embraced hints of aqua and cobalt, Mark strode through the raw deserted grounds and reminisced about what had once been. Not a day below 60, Mark was rather feeble in his stance, with a house full of memoirs as old as the scars upon his skin. Burying his old, nimble fingers into his trouser pockets, he breathed in the fresh, clean air and turned his head towards the wide stretch of ocean accompanying him. Such tranquil, such serenity – it allowed a feeling of gratitude, or even synchronization between what the shallow shores had seen, and what Mark could remember. But his thoughts were stolen. A glimmer had caught his eye, at the moment where the almost-dead grass met the sandy shore. Walking over and carefully uprooting the object from the soil, Mark became enthralled by what resembled a pocket watch - revealing shades of chestnut, and tiny flecks of gold as he scratched off earth from the ornament. There was no clock on the watch – just a circle f ull of dirt and grass. Buried in the middle of the Gallipoli battlefield, the watch brought memories of what had happened in that exact spot on that exact day many years ago, and softly brought a tear to his eye. *** â€Å"Gas! Gas! Quick, boys!† As Mark covered his face, he turned around to see some men still yelling and stumbling – floundering ecstatically through the misty panes and thick olive light. Under a green sea, the brave men choked and drowned. Looking up, the sky was swallowed in shadows of burgundy and copper – or maybe that was just his imagination. War on the Western front had sunk into stalemate. Both sides were peering at each other from fortified trenches as machine guns fired, forced to spill precious blood in futile frontal attacks. The battlefield was a living hell – the inescapable groans were heartrending. The soldiers were constantly the unavoidable victims of the growing fear that they would never see their homes or families again, while fatigue and psychological trauma ruined the brave souls for life just as badly as the mutilation from the gunshot wounds. There were so many gunshots that Mark could not tell where each was coming from. While looking to the left, he could be struck from the right and vice versa. There was a reason they called the ground between trenches ‘No Man’s Land’. A young man who played ‘footer’ was shot when running out. He started trying to crawl back to our lines and was so close, when he was hit again. He was dead within a few minutes. Mark had a gut feeling it was not safe to be where he was. He knew that he had to move. Shouting out to his fellows to stop firing to allow him to travel, he lifted his weapon from his side and prayed to God he would survive. Chaos and confusion menaced his mind as he imagined the possible fate of his actions. Stepping out of his harbor, he made a mad dash to the next trench. As he slid into the dirt and watched dust rise past his face, an excruciating burn encompassed his left side – pulling all thoughts to an abrupt halt as blood spilled out and clung to the material of his uniform. He suffered a splinter of a bullet in the side – deeply slicing his torso. Breathing through the seamless agony, Mark turned around to see he was joined by another solider by the name of Lex. From what Mark could see, he was suffering horribly with open wounds, blood-stained bandages falling from his head, leg and shoulder and a struggle for air. Mark knew he had to help, or else Lex could be just another number for the death count to feast on. No one else was there, and no stretch- bearers of any sort, so he threw the poor soldier’s arm around his neck and helped him down the ridge. With a swollen knee – either another splinter of a bullet, or cut by the rocks, Mark could hardly walk. He passed Lex on, to other soldiers, as he wiped the sweat

Site analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Site analysis - Essay Example Wetlands are distributed in the United States due to the differences in geology, water source, and climate. They consume a wider area as far as the coastal margins. In this article, I will consider the wetlands in West Virginia and the effects they have to the locals concerning the agricultural sector. West Virginia has a vast number of wetlands associated with streams. They occur in floodplains and are mainly associated with lakes or can occur as an isolated land feature. Wetlands results in large open water bodies and vegetation such as the Okefenokee Swamp. Hydrologic processes that occur in wetlands are the processes that exist in the healthy water body and are collectively referred as the hydrological cycle. The cycle consists of components such as the precipitation, groundwater flow, surface water flow, and evaporation Cohen (1984). Wetlands continually receive water and lose it through the exchange in the atmospheres, ground water, and streams. Both of the systems provide a conducive geological setting and appropriate and constant supply of water that are necessary for the existence of the wetlands. The wetland water sum is the sum of the inflows and outflows from the wetland. The total water amount for the wetland is represented in the equation below The importance of every component in a wetland varies in the composition of the hydrological cycle from wetland to wetland. The Okefenokee in Georgia is a typical prairie pothole. As a result, it receives direct precipitation and a considerable amount of runoff from the surrounding uplands as well as ground water inflow. It loses water to evaporation, keeping to groundwater or overflow in conditions of excess precipitation and runoff. Wetlands are considered as a complex ecosystem in which underground water and surface water interact with each other, but since the underground water can’t be observed

Contract and Patent Law Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Contract and Patent Law - Assignment Example public, nor its components and usage described in a publication for a period of one year before the invention, nor offered for sale for a period of one year, before the filing for a patent (Cheeseman, 2011). The other rule guiding the granting of a patent is the fact that the invention must be useful and able to perform the intended purpose. Additionally, the invention should not be exactly similar to a pre-existing product (Cheeseman, 2011). However, an improvement on a previously existing product that is non-obvious is also patentable. Thus, based on Billy’s Towrack invention, it is patentable since the invention is useful for carrying sporting equipment, it is a non-obvious improvement from the already existing tows in that it is lighter and has only the single wheel. Thus, Billy can successfully obtain a patent for this device. 2. Under the requirements of the trademark laws, a symbol, a word or a name can only be registered as a trademark if it is able to differentiate the products or services offered by one entity from those offered by others. The symbol or the name used should not be confusing to the consumers, to an extent of not knowing the difference between one product and the other (Cheeseman, 2011). Additionally, the symbols and names used should not be similar to those of an already existing product, and neither should they be deceptive on the sides of the consumers. Based on the name used by Billy for his invented device, Towrack is just but a general name, which does not serve to differentiate the device from the common ones of its kind. Thus, Billy may not obtain a trademark by using this name to identify his product, since it is not distinctive to the consumers.

Determinants for the Exchange Rates in Long Run

Determinants for the Exchange Rates in Long Run Table of Contents (Jump to) 1. Introduction 2. Determinants can affect the foreign exchange value of a currency in a long term 2.1. Purchasing power parity (PPP) and inflation rates 2.2. Growth rate of the economy 2.3. Interest rates 2.4. Commodity prices 2.5. Foreign direct investment and international speculation 2.6. Exchange rate expectations 2.7. Intervention into the foreign exchange market from authorities 3. Conclusion Reference list Introduction The foreign exchange market is primarily a wholesale market, where transactions are of the order of hundreds of thousands of dollars or even greater. The marketplace can consists of a telecommunication network and a range of information technology system, which help provide a mechanism for the exchange of currency around the world. The retail market where small volumes can be handled is often at a shop front location, such as an exchange bureau, a bank. In fact, the currency exchange rate is not only impacted by the law of demand and supply but also other determinants. The paper identifies and evaluates many determinants for the exchange rates in long run. These determinants are (1) purchasing power parity and inflation rates, (2) growth rates of the economy, (3) interest rates, (4) commodity prices, (5) foreign direct investment and international speculation, (6) exchange rates expectations, and (7) intervention into the foreign exchange market from authorities. The relative impact of structural shocks on the movement of exchange rates after the Bretton Woods period has examined multivariate processes. Determinants can affect the foreign exchange value of a currency in a long term 2.1. Purchasing power parity (PPP) and inflation rates If a domestic economy has higher inflation than the rest of the world, a decrease in demand for exports will result in the local currency exchange rates, which become less competitive in world market. Accordingly, there will be less demand for the local currency. On the other hand, when an increase in demand for imports as overseas goods become cheaper, compared to the domestic market, there will be an increase in supply of the local currency exchange rate. The PPP theory is based on traded goods and services. The determination of the exchange rates has sustained the maintenance of purchasing power parity between currencies. ‘PPP is indeed an important determinant of nominal currency valuation. ‘The law of one price’ asserts that, absent impediments to free trade, goods and services should have the same relative price regardless of the country in which they are sold.’[1] Which goods and services are cheaper in one country than another will be brought where they are cheap, and then to be sold where they are more expensive. From the viewpoint of exchange rate determination, PPP is useful as a reminder that the monetary policy has no long-run influence on the exchange rate. ‘When PPP diverges more than 15-20 per cent from its historical mean, that has proven to be among the most accurate indicators of a pending change in currency trends,’ [2] observed Mr. Eric Lonergan, global strategist for Cazenove in London. Nevertheless, the exchange rate can stray away from its PPP. In fact, PPP exchange rates are determined by comparing the national prices for a large volume of goods and services. A weaker PPP has contented in inflation rate, rather than actual prices of goods. The fall in the value of domestic currency results in reducing local currency rate, compared to the rest of the world. This phenomenon can offset the pricing impact of inflation. As a result, nations with different inflation rates can expect their exchange rate to adjust to offset these differentials in long run. ‘Real exchange rate movements do not completely coincide with perceived changes in competitiveness, reflecting a basic flaw in the PPP approach. Instead, the likely effects of exchange rate changes on the trade balance are often difficult to predict without further information regarding the source of the shock.’[3] The theory seems to equalize interdependence between the exchange rate and inflation rates. It seems impossible to have inflation, if the domestic market value of the currency exchange is increasing. On the other hand, it is also impossible to avoid inflation if the market value of the currency is decreasing. 2.2. Growth rate of the economy If a nation experiences higher economic growth rate than its major trading partners, the income and demand for import-export goods and services will grow at a faster rate. As a result, paying for the growth of imports will consequently result in an increase in the supply of the local currency in the foreign exchange world. ‘Productivity differences were found to have a negative and statistically significant effect both in the short-run and the long-run. This suggests that if the US becomes more productive relative to its major trading partners, incomes and imports rise, causing depreciation of the US dollar.’[4] ‘In particular, structural components in both the current and capital accounts underlying each countrys net trade and net foreign asset positions are shown to influence the path of the long-run real exchange rate for each country.’[5] The supply impact is to reduce the price of the local currency exchange while the demand impact is to increase the price of local currency. The net impact will depend on the strength of each separate cause. 2.3. Interest rates Fiscal considerations become fundamental determinants of the decision of different foreign exchange regime. ‘In the long run, in contrast, exchange rate movements are driven by the fundamental, leading to a relationship between interest rates and exchange rates that are more consistent with UIP [Uncovered interest parity]’[6]. What has happened in foreign exchange market might not accord with what happens a country where experiences higher interst rate and a fall in the value of its currency. If interset rates are constant, a country which has higher interest rate will result in higher inflation. Higher inflation will cause a depreciating currency. The relationship between the impact of distinguishing interest rate movements on exchange rates can provide different impacts in terms of local currency exchange rate experiencing higher interst rates than the rest of the world. In fact, higher interest rates will encourage capital inflow to the domestic economy and discourage capital outflow. This phenonmenon will result from oversea investers who have tried to place funds in dosmetic market in order to take advantage of higher returns. As a result, a domestic buyer can invest in a greater proportion of funds in domestic financial markets. 2.4. Commodity prices If export from a nation becomes more expensive due to inflations, oversea importers will turn to other nations. As a result, the value of the exporting nation will fall, together demand for and the value of the domestic currency. On the other hand, if particular goods and services in a nation become more expensive because of the growth in commodity prices, the importers cannot choose other suppliers since commodity prices are a worldwide incident. As a result, the importers will continue to import commodities from that nation. The total value of the exports will go together with the demand for the domestic currency. The value of domestic currency will increase. The relationship between the trade balance and the exchange rate might not reveal the whole picture of the impacts of real depreciation on the trade balance and import-export flows. ‘There exists a significant long-run relationship between the-dependent variables and their determinants in most cases. A real depreciation of US dollar will decrease US imports and increase US trade balance overall in the long run.’[7] The import-export trading functions have shown that currency depreciation has different impacts on imported-exported goods; the authority should take into consideration in a nation’s trade policy. 2.5. Foreign direct investment and international speculation Foreign direct investment and international speculation can drive the domestic economy changes. Capital inflows to strong economies and outflows from weaker economies depend on how foreign investors speculate the perspectives of a domestic economy. Likewise, a recent decline in domestic currency as its economy becomes less attractive for investment compared to that of world’s largest strong economy. ‘Determinants of the equilibrium real exchange rate also include factors that affect the net trading position of the home country in world markets, as well as the underlying propensity of the home country to be a net lender or borrower of capital. In other words, the interaction between the permanent structural components in both the current and capital account jointly determine the sustainable real exchange rate.’ [8] Globalization has increased the differential between growth of world trade volumes and growth of world GDP as well; thereby enhance import-export activities of a nation. ‘The Brazilian real displays useful information about the long-run path of other currencies in the region. In terms of volatility dynamics, while most currencies display evidence of time-varying variance, the volatility movements in the foreign exchange market seems to be mainly country specific.’ [9] Evidence of common elements in the foreign exchange markets becomes substantial applications. From a macroeconomic standpoint, the movements have been towards financial integration; from the investors’ standpoints, the implications have in term of the assessment of risk and hedging strategy development. 2.6. Exchange rate expectations One of primary impacts on exchange rate movement is the exchange rate expectations. Speculators have formed expectations about the future exchange rate movements and then will take action to fulfil the impact. If participants in foreign exchange market have expected the future value of domestic currency to reduce, they will sell domestic currency. This phenomenon will increase its supply in the foreign market which then causes a fall in its value. On the other hand, if participants speculate the value of domestic currency to increase, they will buy domestic currency, increasing demand for that currency and bring about an appreciation. ‘The exchange rate expectations are incorporated into a switching cost model via the method of exchange rate pass-through on product-specific and country-specific approach.’[10] Foreign exchange traders shift the demand for a currency in expectation of making profits. These traders’ expectations might be wrong sometimes, and thus they might disturb the foreign exchange market ‘unnecessary’. However, they have to speculate correctly on average; otherwise they would lose their money and close their business. 2.7. Intervention into the foreign exchange market from authorities Government or central bank can intervene into foreign exchange markets. They can exert a significant impact on the value of that country’s currency. Official intervention can happen through the activities of central bank, or directly regulate the foreign exchange market by rules, regulations or laws. For instance, the authority can choose a number non-bank authorized foreign exchange dealers. ‘A disequilibrium in the money market significantly affects the level of the reserves in each country. The impact differs in magnitude from country to country depending on the degree of sterilization and the exchange rate regime.’[11] The central bank can intervene by establish to ‘buy time’ for the participants in the currency market. ‘If inflation is 10 per cent higher in Mexico than in the US, the peso would be expected to depreciate against the dollar by 10 per cent to maintain PPP. However, the success of central bankers in controlling price inflation over the past decade has drastically cut inflation differentials between countries to the extent that PPP has only a minimal impact now on nominal exchange rates.’[12] A government has been challenged by a time consistency phenomenon and commitment in technology that results from uncertainty and fixed cost. It will have to look for its choices to optimize the exchange rate arrangements by depending on past currency movement history for a given set of fiscal conditions. That is why with the same basis, some nations sometimes experience fixed or low inflation and other time confront the floating or high inflation in exchange rates. 3. Conclusion Many determinants have impacts on the currency exchange in the long run. Sometimes, these determinants have mutually influenced on the currency exchange system. These determinants among the markets are pronounced in the long-term, where the short-term movements are usually in line with the long-term adjustments. The effects of these mentioned determinants are not uniform among nations. In fact underlying the movements in price, money and currency exchange rates are mutual and complex. Can Computer Think? :: essays research papers

Can Computers Think? The Case For and Against Artificial Intelligence Artificial intelligence has been the subject of many bad "80's" movies and countless science fiction novels. But what happens when we seriously consider the question of computers that think. Is it possible for computers to have complex thoughts, and even emotions, like homo sapien? This paper will seek to answer that question and also look at what attempts are being made to make artificial intelligence (hereafter called AI) a reality. Before we can investigate whether or not computers can think, it is necessary to establish what exactly thinking is. Examining the three main theories is sort of like examining three religions. None offers enough support so as to effectively eliminate the possibility of the others being true. The three main theories are: 1. Thought doesn't exist; enough said. 2. Thought does exist, but is contained wholly in the brain. In other words, the actual material of the brain is cap able of what we identify as thought. 3. Thought is the result of some sort of mystical phenomena involving the soul and a whole slew of other unprovable ideas. Since neither reader nor writer is a scientist, for all intents and purposes, we will say only that thought is what we (as homo sapien) experience. So what are we to consider intelligence? The most compelling argument is that intelligence is the ability to adapt to an environment. Desktop computers can, say, go to a specific WWW address. But, if the address were changed, it wouldn't know how to go about finding the new one (or even that it should). So intelligence is the ability to perform a task taking into consideration the circumstances of completing the task. So now that we have all of that out of that way, can computers think? The issue is contested as hotly among scientists as the advantages of Superman over Batman is among pre-pubescent boys. On the one hand are the scientists who say, as philosopher John Searle does, that â€Å"Programs are all syntax and no semantics.† (Discover, 106) Put another way, a computer can actually achieve thought because it â€Å"merely follows rules that tell it how to shift symbols without ever understanding the meaning of those symbols.† (Discover, 106) On the other side of the debate are the advocates of pandemonium, explained by Robert Wright in Time thus: â€Å"[O]ur brain subconsciously generates competing theories about the world, and only the ‘winning' theory becomes part of consciousness.

Describe Commodus Essay

Commodus changes for the worse. He is innately devious and this is not resolved throughout Gladiator. He identifies his main adversary as Maximus, his father’s favourite, but in reality it is his own lack of moral fibre that is his greatest enemy. Maximus’s fallicious death triggers a surge towards a more confident, vehement Commodus, but when Maximus resurfaces there is a resumption of his initial personality. As any emergence any improvement retracts. Maximus’s strengths are Commodus’s weakenesses. Commodus realises this and holds Maximus in contempt. Maximus is everything Commodus aspires to be. Whilst Maximus’s glass is full of orthodox qualities, Commodus’s is almost empty, apart from a few unvirtuous qualities he embodies. It is this emptiness that makes his lack of moral fibre so transparent. Marcus Aurelius sees through the glass and intends to deny Commodus succession by reverting Rome to a Republic. It is here in Commodus’s murder of his father that we see the true extent of his destructive capacity. Maximus has the love of Lucilla, in which Commodus intensley desires. Maximus has the love of Aurelius, the kind of filial love Commodus has always longed for. Maximus has acceptance, the kind Commodus will never achieve because he is an effete. Maximus is loved, respected and is in commands of power, whereas Commodus is not. It is these intangible commodities that motivate Commodus to aspire to metaphorically become Maximus. He acknowledges Maximus’s charisma as an obstacle and sets out to eradicate Maximus accordingly. He is however, unsuccessful in his plight. Commodus indicts others as the cause of his deficency. He fails to recognise that his greatest obstacle is his inner-self. If he had identified the key to success as self-discovery, then he may have acheived his goals. Commodus does not however; and makes no growth positive growth as a character. He remains immoral, fearful, ambitous, greedy, weak, and shrouded in consuming jealousy. These qualities are expressed in his actions and inter-relations with others. Thriving on death and blood, seen in the gladiatorial games, he mistakes violence for power. He is willing to cheat, threaten and murder to obtain it. He instigates himself as the protector of Rome, seen in his  speech to the Senate: â€Å"I am the father of Rome and they are my children.† Attempting to appoint the adulation that comes with a virtuous hero upon himself, an unvirtuous tyrant. The greatest hindrance to Commodus is his all consuming jealousy. It motivates corruption, disallowing Commodus the ability to recognise his own character and to also expand on it. Instead he is entangled in a perpetual reminder of what he is not. This is his pestilence. This jealousy is augmented when Maximus still comands adoration even as a gladiator, when it should be directed towards Commodus; the emperor. It is here that Commodus realizes the trickery he has employed to could his absence of virtues, to gain the love of Rome, has not prospered. The antithesis of virtue is denied admiration. In an attempt to demonstrate power; Commodus challenges Maximus in the battle arena; which signifies his desperation. Maximus is a conquering general and a gladiatorial champion, whereas Commodus is a skillfull swordsman, but he is weak due to his cowardess, and they are unequally matched. This encounter could have been a growth point for Commodus, by way of conquering fear; but he utilizes his insidious qualities and inflicts a mortal wound before the battle begins; to give himself an unfair advantage. Victorious he is not, and death awaits Commodus. Commodus could never find success with the detainment of vices. It would go against the definition of the conquering hero. Commodus as a hero would distort the structure of Gladiator. Commodus is the antagonist; the one in which unvirtuous qualities are shown; to enthrall a sense of moral code in the film and to also display the virtues that compile a hero; Maximus. From the moment Commodus murders his father, Aurelius, he is doomed not to discover success, unless he redeems himself from the wrong-doing he has committed. This redemption does not occur, and illustrates that Commodus is prepared to change for the worse. Commodus carries out more treacherous acts; such as ordering the murder of Maximus and his family. It is here in the killing of innocence that Commodus spirals out of control; and becomes the epitome of immorality. Commodus faces great conflict and motivation to change his ways. He does  change, he becomes worse. It is crucial to his role as the antagonist that he does not learn from his mistakes; otherwise; he would shift to being a protagonist. The tragic hero is one who faces much adversity; but after a journey of discovery finds redemption; and usually death. The negative growth of Commodus is essential to the plot line of Gladiator. Commodus offers a comparison by which Maximus can be measured; and the two share a symbiotic relationship in the way they need each other for the personality of the characters to be fully recognised. Commodus remains trapped in a downward spiral of unvirtue; disallowing himself from experiencing redemption; the redemption that would have made him a tragic hero. This entrapment in vice is however crucial to the narrative of Gladiator.

Essay on GovernmentEssay Writing Service

Essay on GovernmentEssay Writing Service Essay on Government Essay on GovernmentThe Congress is responsible to provide and maintain the army, the maintenance of trade relations with foreign nations and regulate fiscal policies to maintain the military and the navy. In this regard, the article The 2014 â€Å"Wastebook† of Weird Government-Funded Projects, Ranked from â€Å"Well, Ok† to â€Å"Wha?† by Alicia Lu (2014) relates to all those powers of the US Congress granted by the US Constitution and the Article 1, Section 8. In fact, the article provides the critical evaluation of diverse policies conducted by the government, which though have been sanctioned by the US Congress. At this point, it is worth mentioning the fact that the US Congress determines the budget and spending as well as taxes collected in the US. As a result, the ineffective use of public funds is, to a significant extent, the responsibility of the Congress because it was the Congress that granted and ratified the federal budget and all the spending. At th is point, the military spending is particularly frustrating for the average American because the US army has wasted $16 billion on the unneeded ammunition and, what is more, about $1 billion has been spent on the destroying of the unneeded ammunition. In such a way, the US Congress turns out to use public funds ineffectively. This is why the US Congress is currently referred to as one of the most wasteful and ineffective in terms of the government spending. However, the actions and policies conducted by the US Congress do not contradict to the US Constitution and the Congress operates within the framework defined by the US Constitution. The problem is that the US Congress fails to exercise its powers effectively.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In such a situation, members of the Congress, such as Senators from my state, Texas, John Cornyn and Ted Cruz and representative from my district, Lance Gooden, underperform, at the least. In fact, they apparently fail to perform their functions effectively because they fail to create the balanced budget and prevent the ineffective use of funds by the US government and the military (Irons, 2009). For example, the US Congress could have cut the spending of the federal budget on the US army that would stimulate the US army to save costs and use them more effectively that would lead to the refusal form unneeded ammunition and saving of the public funds. In fact, under Article 1 Section 8 of the US Constitution, it is the power of the Congress to maintain the military and conduct fiscal policies as well as to manage the federal finance. However, the Congress fails to exercise its powers effectively so far.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The Congress should change its policies and exercise its powers more effectively to help the US to use the public funds more effectively and to prevent the misuse of the public funds. In this regard, the current situation and ineffectiveness of members of the Congres s reveals the fact that the US Constitution cannot make the US Congress effective or ineffective but, instead, the US Constitution creates conditions for the fair use of its powers, while it is the personal responsibility of each member of the Congress to exercise those powers widely and effectively. Thus, the US Congress has considerable powers granted by the US Constitution. However, the Congress does not always uses those powers effectively. Hence, each member of the Congress should bear the personal responsibility for proper exercising of available powers.

What's in an X-ray Room Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

What's in an X-ray Room - Essay Example An X-ray table is equally important to position the patient according to the body part that needs to be radiographed. This is likewise important to put patients in the most comfortable position, especially those who are not mobile and could not stand or walk, while doing radiographic procedures. Finally, X-ray shields and gowns are â€Å"physical barriers designed to provide protection from the effects of ionizing radiation; also, the technology of providing such protection† (McGraw-Hill Concise Encyclopedia of Engineering, 2002, par. 1). As emphasized, it is crucial and important for the â€Å"protection of human life (which) is the goal of radiation shielding. In other instances, protection may be required for structural materials which would otherwise be exposed to high-intensity radiation, or for radiation-sensitive materials such as photographic film and certain electronic components† (McGraw-Hill Concise Encyclopedia of Engineering, 2002, par.

Thin Ice by Mark Bowen Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Thin Ice by Mark Bowen - Essay Example Also since Mark Bowen has a PhD from MIT and is no newcomer to science I was assured that the book would be reliable and interesting. In a smooth flowing narrative, Bowen, a mountain climber, a physicist and a science writer who has accompanied Thompson on several expeditions from the Andean Altiplano to Tibetan ice sheets, from the Alaskan Bona-Churchill glacier to Mount Kilimanjaro in Kenya, describes drilling ice at high altitudes. In the process explains to us the science behind the steady rise in global temperature due to human activities. The subtitle of this book, Unlocking the secrets of climate in the worlds highest mountains, briefly summarizes what this book is about. Bowen’s book is about the exploits of Lonnie Thompson, a professor. Thompson challenged the established beliefs on how climate change occurs and instead put forth his revolutionary lightweight-coring techniques that could draw ice cores. Bowen explains how carbon dioxide and water vapor by interacting with each other regulate earth’s thermostat. He also argues that scientific evidence conclusively shows that it is the use of fossil fuels that has accelerated global warming and predicts that soon the snows of Kilimanjaro will be no more. Thin Ice has some exciting stories. It has stories of transporting the scientists and their drilling equipment to inaccessible places, of team members struggling with altitude sickness, of windstorms that destroy the solar panels which power their drill, of the crew trying to send ice core samples with a hot-air balloon, etc. The scientists camp for weeks at a time taking in â€Å"the brown earth and the blue sky and the white ice..." (Mike Bowen, 2005) and these seeps into their skins so much that they begin to bond emotionally with the mountains. Thompsons team that includes Bowen made a number of surprising additions to the climate theory and certain established views. One such surprise discovery was that when ice in the poles gets thick
